The Ohio National Guard wishes everyone a happy Independence Day, and gives thanks to our current and former Soldiers and Airmen who have helped Americans to enjoy more than 240 years of freedom.

For those in Columbus on July 3, the 122nd Army Band will be marching in the Red, White & Boom parade at 6 p.m. as well as performing the national anthem prior to the fireworks show later that evening, and on July 4 will march in the Independence Day parade in Sunbury, Ohio.

The Drosendahl Memorial stone, recently relocated on the running track at the Air National Guard’s I.G. Brown Training and Education Center in East Tennessee, was dedicated by graduates of the Academy of Military Science in memory of Air Force 2nd Lt. Robert H. Drosendahl, a 1972 AMS graduate and a New Jersey Air National Guard officer who died in service to the nation. Other AMS officers memorialized on the stone include Ohio Air National Guard Lt. Michael W. Mann, who died in June 1975.

An Ohio National Guard Soldier missing for more than 75 years was laid to rest July 10, 2017, in his hometown of Port Clinton, Ohio. Technician 4th Grade John Kovach Jr., whose remains were recently identified, died in November 1942 in a Japanese prison camp following the Bataan Death March.

On this day in Ohio National Guard history, July 18, 1917:

Headquarters, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Buckeye) is constituted in the Ohio National Guard as Headquarters, 37th Division. Across its century of service, the 37th has answered the call for World War I, World War II, Korean War, Kosovo and the War on Terrorism as well as countless responses to the citizens of Ohio.

Celebrating the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s century of service:

Eight Soldiers of the 37th Infantry Division earned the Medal of Honor, with seven coming during World War II. Two of those were earned on July 31, 1943, as both Pfc. Frank Petrarca of Medical Detachment, 145th Infantry and Pvt. Rodger Young of Company B, 148th Infantry were killed during the battle for the island of New Georgia, with their actions earning them the nation’s highest award for valor.
