CASSTOWN, Ohio — Soldiers from the Piqua-based 1487th Transportation Company recently lent a local school district a much-needed hand.

When Miami East Local School District officials were constructing a new high school, they realized they would need assistance moving from their old building into the new $18.6 million facility, so they requested help from their local Ohio National Guard unit.

The move was scheduled for June 11, and after meeting at their Piqua armory, the Soldiers headed out to Casstown to assist the school officials with the move to their new building. Teachers and faculty members were present to keep things running smoothly, color-coding and labeling boxes by room number to ensure a quick and efficient process.

Troops loaded up four 40-foot semitrailers, drove them to the new building, off-loaded them and delivered the contents to the correct classrooms. Appreciative faculty members provided lunch for the troops, grilling hamburgers and hot dogs. Because the troops finished the move before lunch — a task they expected to take all day, they were also able to help move the remaining school equipment out into the halls for a future auction. The extra help saved the teachers and faculty about six days of additional work.
