DAYTON, Ohio (10/31/16) —A $100,000 scholarship fund designed to help members of the Ohio National Guard attend graduate school has been established by Wright State University in Dayton.

The graduate scholarship fund was announced during an Oct. 31 news conference at Wright State.

“At Wright State, we believe that education should be affordable and accessible to students of all backgrounds and all walks of life,” said Thomas Sudkamp, the university’s provost, chief academic officer and vice president for curriculum. “Here we’re working on the affordability for a group of people we want to recognize for their service to this country.”

The scholarships will pay up to $2,500 in tuition per semester for a full-time graduate student who is also a current member in good standing with the Ohio National Guard, and meets all of the requirements to get into their graduate program of choice.
Maj. Gen. Mark E. Bartman, Ohio adjutant general, called the scholarship program a great partnership between the Ohio National Guard, Wright State and the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

“What I would really like to see, as the adjutant general — in the fact that we have 16,000 Soldiers and Airmen in the Ohio National Guard — of course, is that other institutions of higher learning decide to pick up what Wright State is doing and replicate this type of benefit throughout the state of Ohio,” Bartman said.

Ohio Army National Guard 1st Sgt. Jacob Kandel said he has been thinking about getting his master’s degree and liked what he heard about the scholarship program.

“I’ve already emailed the Wright State University personnel asking for a face-to-face sit down to further learn about the programs offered,” Kandel said after the announcement.

Ohio Department of Higher Education Chancellor John Carey said this scholarship provides another opportunity for people — in this specific case, members of the Ohio National Guard — to improve their skills and education, likely leading to increased career opportunities.

“In Ohio we only have about 43 percent attainment for higher education, so we need people with certificates, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees and graduate degrees. As you move up the education ladder, a graduate degree opens up doors to you that you may not have otherwise,” Carey said.

With a few exceptions, most graduate degree programs at Wright State are eligible for the scholarship program, and many degree programs have evening or online classes.
