Stars align for Ohio National Guard’s newest general officer

180th Fighter Wing conducts water survival training

180th FW conducts night flying to maintain readiness
An F-16 Fighting Falcon, assigned to the Ohio National Guard’s 180th Fighter Wing in Swanton, Ohio, takes off for a recent nighttime training mission. Training flights normally take place during daylight hours, but F-16 pilots and maintenance personnel are required to conduct night operations as part of their overall readiness training. Tasked with supporting the nationwide Aerospace Control Alert homeland defense mission, the 180th FW is ready to protect the airspace encompassing the northeastern U.S. at a moment’s notice.
Celebrating National Aviation Day, Aug. 19
First observed in 1939, National Aviation Day recognizes those who helped pioneer aviation in the U.S., including Ohio native Orville Wright (whose birthday is Aug. 19), one of the legendary Wright Brothers who conducted the first successful manned flight in 1903. In this photo, the crew of a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, from Company C, 1st Battalion, 137th Aviation Regiment, 28th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade, conducts a training flight at the unit’s mobilization station. Soldiers from the 1-137th Aviation Regiment, out of Columbus, Ohio, and Company B, 3rd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment (which operates the CH-47 Chinook), out of North Canton, Ohio, were mobilized recently for an approximately yearlong deployment in support of U.S. Central Command. Both units are currently conducting training at their mobilization station.
Two Ohio teams compete at MAC Region Two Championships
Two Ohio Army National Guard teams recently competed in the National Guard Marksmanship Advisory Council Region Two Championships, with 1st Lt. Zachary Brewington (pictured, right) of the 838th Military Police Company earning the title of Novice Individual Overall Aggregate Champion. Participants spent four intense days in heat, rain and intense sunlight, competing in the event held Aug. 27-30, 2020, at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa.

3 Ohio National Guard members among honorees during virtual 2020 NGAUS Conference
The National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) has selected Ohio Air National Guard Capt. Walter Borowitz (left) and Ohio Army National Guard 1st Lt. Emily Ostroski (right) as two of this year’s recipients of its Theodore Roosevelt Leadership Award for junior officers. OHARNG Chief Warrant Office 3 James “J.B.” Camechis (center) is one of the winners of the Eagle Rising Award, presented annually by NGAUS to recognize the achievements and dedicated service of Army National Guard warrant officers. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the awards were presented Aug. 28-29 at the 142nd annual NGAUS General Conference & Exhibition during a first-of-its-kind, virtual ceremony.
