Emergency preparedness exercise tests first responders' skills

COLUMBUS, Ohio (06/20/2013) — An emergency preparedness exercise was conducted June 20, 2013, at Rickenbacker International Airport in Columbus, Ohio, to measure the proficiency and effectiveness of military and civilian first responders. The exercise, which required members of the Ohio National Guard, Red Cross and multiple area fire stations to communicate and work to together, was based on a commercial passenger plane that had to make an emergency landing at the airport, and involved more than 200 volunteers who played the role of passengers-casualties. The Federal Aviation Administration requires these types of exercises to be planned and conducted every three years.
