COLUMBUS, Ohio — (7/9/13) The Ohio National Guard Biathlon team is preparing for another great season, beginning with select members shooting in the National Rifle Association Small Bore Competition, July 16-19, 2013, at Camp Perry Joint Training Center in Port Clinton, Ohio, as part of the National Rifle and Pistol Matches.

The National Guard is the only Department of Defense entity that competes in biathlon and provides military members who develop the highest levels of skiing and rifle marksmanship necessary to train and represent the National Guard and the U.S. military in national and international competitions, including the Winter Olympics. Interested Ohio National Guard member-athletes are encouraged to attend a biathlon training camp scheduled for Sept. 26-30 at Camp Ripley, Minn., which will include marksmanship training, roller skiing and a run-shoot competition.

Prerequisites for interested Ohio National Guard members are that they must be in good physical shape, including being able to achieve a high score in the running event of their service branch’s physical fitness test. Soldiers or Airmen interested in trying out for this year’s team should contact Maj. Dan Long, state coordinator and team coach, at daniel.j.long18.mil@mail.mil.
