Ohio Air National Guard state command chief master sergeant, Perrysburg native, Bowling Green alum Smith retires

CMSgt SmithCOLUMBUS, Ohio (12/20/16) — Chief Master Sgt. Philip D. Smith, Ohio’s ninth state command chief master sergeant, officially retires from the position effective Dec 22.

As Ohio’s command chief — the highest-ranking enlisted position in the Ohio Air National Guard — Smith is the principal enlisted advisor to senior leadership and is responsible for influencing the health, morale and welfare of the organization’s nearly 5,000 enlisted personnel and their families.

Smith, a Perrysburg, Ohio native, has served 23 years in the Ohio Air National Guard. During his career, Smith served in the 555th Air Force Band, Toledo, Ohio, as the unit training manager, unit deployment manager, unit resource advisor and band superintendent. In February 2012, he became the 180th Fighter Wing’s human resource advisor, where he advised and assisted Air National Guard senior leadership on strategic initiatives that directly affected organizational culture as well as the professional development of all the unit’s Airmen. In August 2013, Chief Smith served as an instructor for the Human Resource Advisor Orientation Course at the National Guard Readiness Center. Smith assumed the position of state command chief in January 2014.

In his civilian career, Smith retired from Perrysburg Junior High School, where he was the orchestra teacher. Professional awards include the 1994 Perrysburg Education Association Teacher of the Year and 2003 Perrysburg Schools Foundation Junior High Teacher of the Year.

Smith has degrees from Bowling Green State University, Ashland University and the Community College of the Air Force
