On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Feb. 2, 1813, Gen. William Henry Harrison established Fort Meigs on the south side of the Maumee River near present day Perrysburg, Ohio. The fort was to serve as a temporary supply depot and staging area for an invasion of Canada. Named for then-Ohio Gov. Return Jonathan Meigs Jr., the garrison was a home for more than 2,000 men, comprised of U.S. regulars and militia from Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Virginia. This 1913 drawing by S.H. Phillips depicts one of the two attacks made by the British on the fort in May and June 1813; both attacks were repulsed. An African-American History Month celebration at Beightler Armory this month saw the Ohio Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen bring the famed aviators' story of triumph over prejudice to fight for our nation during World War II to the Ohio National Guard. The group included one of the original Airmen, aircraft mechanic Paul Menefield. A total of 961 pilots and 15,000 of all military air corps skills were trained at Tuskegee, Alabama. The 332nd Fighter Group of the Airmen compiled a distinguished combat record in Europe. Today's chapter includes other African-American Air Force veterans and those dedicated to keeping the memory of the Airmen alive. An emotional moment occurred early in the program, when Chapter President Edward Morast said, “I'll ask all the Tuskegee Airmen to stand up and salute the men and women who guard our freedom today.” | |
