How 9/11 changed the
Ohio National Guard
The Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks changed the role of the National Guard and how it is utilized as part of the nation’s defense. Ohio National Guard Soldiers and Airmen reflect on the events of 9/11, the impact on them, and how that day changed Ohio National Guard operations. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is an occasion to honor the victims and to express gratitude to all U.S. service members who’ve deployed since then to defend the homeland.
178th Wing Airmen practice water rescue skills
Airmen assigned to the 180th Fighter Wing participate in a 24-hour ruck march at the wing, Sept. 11, 2021, in Swanton, Ohio. Nearly 90 Airmen marched more than 250 miles during the 24-hour ruck in remembrance of those killed during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as well as America’s prisoners of war and those still missing in action to honor National POW/MIA Recognition Day on Sept. 17.
178th Wing Airmen practice water rescue skills

The 178th is one of the first, fully operational Air National Guard units to provide real-world swift water rescue services, in partnership with local civil first responders.
