Pinn leaves legacy as Medal of Honor recipient

First Sgt. Robert Pinn served in Company I of the 5th United States Colored Troops, also known as the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On Sept. 29, 1864, during the Battle of New Market Heights, Va., Pinn took command of his company after all the officers had been killed or wounded and gallantly led it through the battle. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. In August 2025, Fort Walker, Va., formerly Fort A.P. Hill, was redesignated as Fort A.P. Hill again, this time in recognition of Medal of Honor recipients Pvt. Bruce Anderson, Pinn and Lt. Col. Edward Hill. Pinn’s legacy lives on as part of the installation’s revived name.

174th ADA Soldiers take part in live-fire exercise during BRIGHT STAR 25 in Egypt

Soldiers assigned to 174th Air Defense Artillery Brigade perform a final systems check on a FIM-92 Stinger missile in preparation for a Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise (CALFEX) during BRIGHT STAR 25 at Mohamed Naguib Military Base, Egypt, Sept. 9, 2025. Exercise BRIGHT STAR 25 was a multilateral U.S. Central Command field training and command post exercise and senior leader seminar, held in the Egypt along with over 40 additional partner nations with the goal of strengthening military-to-military relationships and enhancing regional security between U.S. forces and partner nations in the CENTCOM area of responsibility.

A U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker from the 121st Air Refueling Wing and an F-35A Lightning II from Eglin Air Force Base fly over Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base during the Columbus Air Show, Aug. 23, 2025. This year’s event featured more than 20 aircraft, including a KC-135 Stratotanker from the 121st Air Refueling Wing, which served as the base of operations for military aircraft participating in the show.

First Non-Kinetic Crew Commander Course graduates in Mansfield

Airmen of the 179th Cyberspace Wing, based in Mansfield, Ohio, have graduated their first class of the newly created Non-Kinetic Crew Commander Course, or NKCC, hitting a new milestone in their efforts to forge a new mission for the U.S. Air Force. As the Air National Guard's first Cyberspace Wing, the unit has been tasked to complete several mission conversion requirements to become fully operational.

1-174th ADA Regiment participates in Exercise Northern Strike 25-2

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment were among the approximately 7,500 participants during Exercise Northern Strike 25-2, Aug. 2-16, 2025. Michigan’s largest and longest exercise designed to validate the capabilities of the joint reserve force, Exercise Northern Strike provides realistic, multidomain training to enhance readiness and interoperability. Northern Strike 25-2 was conducted at the National All-Domain Warfighting Center, which encompasses Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center and Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

1484th Transportation Company excels during Operation Patriot Press

Members of the 1484th Transportation Company carried out storage reform at Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky during their two-week annual training in July 2025 by participating in Operation Patriot Press, a large-scale logistics exercise that offers realistic training opportunities for Army Reserve, National Guard and active-duty Soldiers to improve their logistical skills and readiness.

OHNG, Angolan representatives meet to discuss new state partnership

The Ohio National Guard has added a third country, the Republic of Angola, to the longstanding and highly successful State Partnership Program, which links U.S. states with partner countries around the world to promote access, increase military capability and improve interoperability. Built on the accomplishments of its existing partnerships with Hungary and Serbia, the Ohio National Guard looks to support and enhance U.S. engagement, cooperation and assistance in Africa through this new relationship.

178th Wing scores top 5% in entire Air Force during inspection

The 178th Wing scored in the top 5% of all Air Force wings during a combat readiness inspection conducted in July 2025 at the Springfield-Beckley Air National Guard Base in Springfield, Ohio and the Warrior Training Center located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The inspection evaluated wing members’ preparedness for scenarios they might encounter in a contested combat environment and during real-world emergencies at home and abroad.

121st ARW trains in Alaska during REFORPAC 2025

Airmen and aircraft from the 121st Air Refueling Wing took part in Resolute Force Pacific (REFORPAC) 2025 at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, July 10-Aug. 8, 2025. For the exercise, the Air Force tasked U.S. Pacific Air Forces to demonstrate its ability to rapidly deploy thousands of service members and associated equipment to multiple locations in the Indo-Pacific theater of operations to defend the U.S., allied and partner nations and their interests in the Pacific. REFORPAC 2025 employed more than 400 joint and coalition aircraft and more than 12,000 service members at more than 50 locations across 3,000 miles.
