- Understand and embody the legacy of the institution to which you belong.
- Military traditions are important to our culture and separate our noble profession from all others.
- Protect and promote the National Guard brand.
Intentionally shaping our culture means grounding it in the values, heritage, and traditions that define who we are. In the military – and especially within the National Guard – our legacy is not just history; it’s a living standard that guides our conduct, strengthens our identity, and binds generations of members together.
Honoring our military heritage means understanding the sacrifices, discipline, and commitment of those who came before us. Our traditions are not mere ceremonies; they are expressions of our values – courage, duty, and loyalty – and they distinguish our profession from all others. As members of the Ohio National Guard, we carry a dual responsibility to our Nation and to our communities. Our unique role – serving both state and federal missions – makes our brand especially powerful. Whether responding to natural disasters or deploying overseas, we represent a force rooted in service, resilience, and honor.
As we reflect on our military heritage, it’s fitting to remember Armed Forces Day, which took place on Saturday, May 17. Observed annually, on the third Saturday of May, this unified celebration of all military branches was officially established by President Harry S. Truman. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on May 20, 1950, and it continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the dedication of our Armed Forces and the enduring importance of joint service.
