BE Resilient

- A characteristic of our profession is occasional adversity. We exist to respond on Ohio or America’s worst day.
- Preparing for tough times is essential. Build financial, physical, mental, and relationship reserves prior to adversity.
- Be mentally and physically tough.
- The ability to individually and collectively “bounce back” is essential to our success as an organization.
This week’s fundamental is one of the most important traits of a world-class organization and culture:
Resilience is the base and backbone of strong individuals and high-performing teams. Our profession demands it – we exist to respond on Ohio’s or America’s worst day. Adversity will come. What matters most is how we prepare and respond.
Building resilience means developing reserves – physical, mental, and relational – before adversity strikes. It means taking care of your health, your mind, and your relationships, so you’re ready when challenges come. Being mentally and physically tough is essential. The ability to individually and collectively bounce back defines our long-term success. Resilience requires personal courage – the courage to face discomfort, uncertainty, and change head–on. Change is constant. What got us here may not get us to the next level. True resilience requires embracing change – not resisting it. Step outside your comfort zone. Be flexible. Be excited by the possibilities that change brings.
Resilience is also rooted in service. Be selfless. Be a servant. Lead with the mindset of helping others – your family, your fellow Soldiers and Airmen, and your community. Great leaders put people first, building trust and cohesion by placing others before themselves. The most fulfilled individuals are those who give back.
As leaders, we must teach, coach, and mentor those who will carry the mission forward. Counseling, feedback, and recognition are lifelines that build confidence and resiliency in our teams. When team members (Soldiers, Airmen, and Civilians) know they are seen, supported, and valued, they grow stronger.
Lastly, remember – your attitude matters. It’s infectious. A positive, resilient outlook will ripple across your formation and fuel a culture of strength, trust, and perseverance. We’re building a world-class culture together – not by chance, but through daily commitment to our values and these fundamentals. This is the culture we want to be known for, and it starts with consistent, intentional action. It takes time, effort, and repetition to turn these values into habits. Talk about it. Live it.
While this week marks the end of the initial rollout, it’s just the beginning. As we enter the next phase, Brigade and Wing leadership will lead the charge, sharing weekly reflections and videos – starting with Fundamental #1 – to bring new energy and insight.
