296th Firefighter Named Soldier of the Year
By Sgt. Chad Baon, Unit Public Affairs Represenatative,
5694th, 295th and 296th Engineer Detachments

Spc. Steven Arce, a firefighter from the 296th Engineer Detachment, has had a great quarter. Not only is Arce expecting his first child, but his professional attitude and immense technical proficiency made Arce an obvious choice to be chosen as the 296th Soldier of the Year.

When he learned he had been chosen, Arce immediately began studying for the 112th Engineer Battalion competition, and it showed! After taking a PT test and standing before a grueling board review, Arce was notified that he had won yet another Soldier of the Year competition. Unsatisfied with being the best in his battalion, Arce began another regimen of studying and physical conditioning for the 16th Engineer Brigade competition. At this level of competition, Arce was up against the best Soldiers in the brigade. Undaunted, he excelled in the physical training portion of the competition and once again wowed the review board to named Brigade Soldier of the Year.

The next step of competition puts Arce against the best Soldiers in the state and will be conducted 17 April. His many accomplishments have caught the eye of his peers, NCOs, and officers. In a rare feat for the firefighters, then-Pfc. Arce was awarded a time-in-grade waiver and promoted to specialist. He is a great asset not only to the firefighters, but to the entire Army. We all wish Spc. Arce good luck on his next level of competition and congratulate him on the upcoming birth of his child!
