Staff Sgt. John S. Worcester, a communications navigations and defensive systems technician with the 179th Airlift Wing, worked to maintain the LC-130 — a ski-equipped variant of the C-130 Hercules operated by the U.S. Air Force in the Arctic and Antarctica — in support of Operation Deep Freeze earlier this year at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Operation Deep Freeze is a partnership between the Air Force and the National Science Foundation that provides logistical support to the scientific research being conducted in Antarctica.

When Ohio Army National Guard Spc. Adam Slabodnick reported for his first day of basic training last summer, he was nearly twice the age of most of the new recruits. Slabodnick, who is a health and physical education teacher as well as the tennis coach at Avon Lake High School, took a nontraditional path to joining the military.

General Pershing visits 37th Division
On Jan. 28, 1919, the 37th Division was inspected by Gen. John J. Pershing, commander in chief of the American Expeditionary Forces, in France during World War I. He presented several awards including the Distinguished Service Cross.
