Airman tops in her class at DOD Fire Academy

For Airman First Class Sophie Tridico, a member of the Fire Protection Unit at the 179th Airlift Wing, her military career has gotten off to a big start, as she graduated Basic Military Training with the distinguished “First Airman” award and the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy as the top student in her technical school.

Living the American Dream: Military has provided family, friends, career for South Korean immigrant

Spc. John Owen, a chaplain’s assistant with the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, was born in South Korea and raised in an orphanage until he was 7, when he was adopted and eventually came to America. Owen credits the military with helping him find family, friends and a career.

Serving others seems to be second nature for Staff Sgt. Cherelle Hines. She stands out in her community, and even though she was not looking for recognition, she recently received an award for her dedicated involvement.

Haitian immigrant joins Ohio National Guard, fulfills quest for U.S. citizenship

Meet Ohio Army National Guard Spc. Matthieu Henry, a radiology specialist with the 285th Medical Company who was born in Haiti, moved to the U.S. and eventually joined the military and became a U.S. citizen. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Henry served his fellow Ohioans by working at the largest regional food bank in Central Ohio and also provided support for vaccination and testing efforts throughout the state.

Marking the 175th anniversary of the Battle of Buena Vista

On Feb. 23, 1847, American forces defeat Mexican troops at the Battle of Buena Vista. The 2nd and 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiments were active in the battle, guarding supply depots and escorting wagon trains that were rushing needed supplies to the battle.
