On this day in Ohio National Guard At 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month, World War I would come to an end. The Ohio National Guard would contribute the 37th Division, 166th Infantry and 2nd Battalion, 372nd Infantry to the American Expeditionary Force. On this day in Ohio National A provisional battalion of Soldiers from all units of the 37th Division led the formal reentry of the King and Queen of Belgium into the capitol city of Brussels after four years of war. Lt. Col. William Marlin, who commanded the provisional unit, later wrote: “It was a scene that beggars description. For here was a people released from bondage but a day previous giving vent to its joy in the outward manifestations of cheers and songs, of music, laughter and gayety. The roar of the greeting coupled with the ever present cry 'Vive le America' will ring in the ears and memory of the Americans who heard it as long as they live.” Ohio National Guard graphic |
