Maj. Gen. Deborah A. Ashenhurst, Ohio adjutant general, welcomes home Soldiers from the Ohio Army National Guard's 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in October 2012 after the unit's yearlong deployment to Afghanistan. Last September, Ashenhurst was sworn in as the vice chair for Army of the National Guard Association of the United States, becoming only the second female to hold the position. NGAUS is the nation's oldest military association lobbying solely for the benefit of the National Guard and educating the public about the Guard's role and history in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Molly Ann McCue (left), wife of Col. Gary A. McCue (right), commander of the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield, Ohio, has been selected as the Air National Guard nominee for the 2013 Joan Orr Air Force Spouse of the Year Award. This prestigious award was established to recognize a military spouse for his or her significant contributions to the Air Force. The winner will be announced later this year.

On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Feb. 7, 1945

On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Feb. 7, 1945, the 148th Infantry Regiment leads the crossing of the Pasig River in Manila, Philippines. Under a severe fire from the enemy, the 3rd Battalion led the way and crossed using wooden assault boats, some of the men using the butt of their rifle as a paddle. By nightfall half of the regiment was across the river.

The 1486th, from Mansfield, Ohio, handed over transportation operations to another Ohio Army National Guard unit, the 1487th Transportation Company, out of Piqua, Ohio, after completing a nine-month deployment overseas. The 1486th returns to Ohio with an official welcome home ceremony on Friday, Feb. 8.

The MCU-2 mask, the first line of defense for the face, eyes and respiratory tract from chemical and biological warfare agents, is a critical piece of equipment for Airmen to maintain.

On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Feb. 14, 1878

On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Feb. 14, 1878, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 145th Armored Regiment, currently stationed in Stow, is organized in Columbus as the Poe Light Guard. The Poe Light Guard was an all black company that later became part of the 9th Ohio and eventually part of the 372d Infantry. This photo shows Lt. George Waller addressing Company B, 372d Infantry Battalion on Nov. 4, 1952, at the Central Armory in Cleveland.

Presidents Day

Ohio is called the "Mother of Presidents," as eight Ohioans have become the President of the United States, and six of them also were members of the National Guard. Three Ohio National Guard members later were elected president: William McKinley Jr. (from left), James A. Garfield and Rutherford B. Hayes.

Maj. Gen. Deborah A. Ashenhurst, Ohio adjutant general, meets with Dr. Terry Johnson, a member of the Ohio House of Representatives who represents the 90th District in southern Ohio. Johnson is also a former Ohio Army National Guard colonel, retiring in 2011 with 21 years of service including three overseas deployments.

On Feb. 22, 1932, by Executive Order of the President of the United States, the Purple Heart was revived.

On Feb. 22, 1932, by Executive Order of the President of the United States, the Purple Heart was revived. The original Purple Heart, known as the Badge of Military Merit, was established by George Washington — then the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army — on Aug. 7, 1782, and was awarded to just three Revolutionary War Soldiers. Although never abolished, the award of the badge was not proposed again officially until after World War I. In this photo, Maj. Gen. Robert S. Beightler, commanding general, 37th Infantry Division, presents the Purple Heart in July 1943 to a 148th Infantry Soldier serving in the Russell Islands.

Col. James Jones, 121st Air Refueling Wing commander, joined several Central Ohio civic leaders to honor the Tuskegee Airmen

As African-American History month comes to a close, the Ohio National Guard looks back at a Nov. 8, 2012, ceremony where Col. James Jones, 121st Air Refueling Wing commander, joined several Central Ohio civic leaders to honor the Tuskegee Airmen. The original Tuskegee Airmen trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field, Ala., and after its 1946 closing, the men from the all-black aviation units were sent to Lockbourne Air Force Base in Columbus, Ohio, which is now known as Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base.
