On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Nov. 2, 1918, the 148th Infantry made a heroic crossing of the Escaut River in Belgium. It was during this crossing that the regimental motto "We'll Do It" was inspired. At the time of the crossing, the units attempting the act were just a little doubtful as to how a swift river could be crossed without pontoons. Maj. Marlin reminded them of a certain ceremony that was to be performed on reaching the Rhine, and with the catch phrase "We'll Do It," the Soldiers went to work, cut down a tree across the Escaut and crossed, single file, over the tree. During this week in Ohio National Guard history, Nov. 23-25, 1863, Union forces under the command of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant go on the offense after a two-month confederate siege of Chattanooga, Tenn. Gen. Joseph Hooker's force took Lookout Mountain on Nov. 24 and Gen. George H. Thomas' and Gen. William T. Sherman's troops took Missionary Ridge the next day. Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg was forced to retreat south, and practically all of Tennessee was cleared for the Union. Ohio provided 41 regiments of infantry, four regiments of cavalry and five separate artillery batteries to the campaign. (Ohio Army National Guard Historical Collections) |
