On this day in Ohio National Guard history, June 6, 1944:

The 112th Engineer Battalion took part in the invasion of France at Normandy, landing with the initial assault waves in support of the 1st Infantry Division. Burdened with heavy loads of equipment and despite heavy casualties, the battalion successfully cleared the beach of underwater obstacles, mines and barbed wire, which permitted supporting infantry to land safely. For their heroism, the battalion would earn the Presidential Unit Citation. In this photo, a streamer for this award is added to the battalion colors during a ceremony in Europe in 1945.
