The Ohio Air National Guard, the second largest Air National Guard in the U.S. with nearly 5,000 Airmen, flew more than 25,000 hours in support of missions around the globe last year and has deployed Airmen to all seven continents since 9/11. We honor seven decades of courageous service of the men and women of the Ohio Air National Guard and U.S. Air Force.

In celebration of the Air Force birthday on Sept. 18, the Ohio National Guard celebrates its first flying unit, the 112th Observation Squadron, 37th Division Aviation, which was organized on June 20, 1927, in Cleveland.

Today, the Ohio Air National Guard's 112th Fighter Squadron, located in Toledo, Ohio, proudly perpetuates the lineage of these Buckeye aviation pioneers. In this photo, planes of the 112th Observation Squadron fly over Camp Perry, Ohio, circa 1935.

On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Sept. 18, 1837:

The 112th Engineer Battalion is organized at Cleveland as the Cleveland Grays, an independent volunteer militia company. Across its 180-year history, the 112th has answered the call for the Civil War, War with Spain, World War I, World War II, Korea and the War on Terrorism, and is the oldest unit in the Ohio National Guard. This P.S. Duval lithograph depicts early members of the Grays in the distinctive dress uniform.

On the last Sunday in September, Americans observe National Gold Star Mother's Day, also known as National Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day.

The day was created to recognize and honor those who've lost a son or daughter in service to their country. This Sunday, we honor Gold Star Mothers and their Families, who carry on with resilience, pride and courage.

On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Sept. 27, 1918: 2nd Lt. Albert Baesel of Company B, 148th Infantry, 37th Division was killed while trying to rescue a wounded Soldier near Ivoiry, France. For his heroic actions that day, Baesel was awarded the Medal of Honor. The 37th, with eight Medal of Honor recipients, celebrates 100 years of service to Ohio and the nation this year, as its lineage lives on with the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
