September is
National Preparedness Month

With experience gained and lessons learned from the 2017 hurricane season, the Ohio National Guard is prepared and mission capable, ready to respond within hours of receiving a call to help Ohio citizens or its neighbors across the United States in the event of a natural disaster.

Focus on State Partnership Program: South Euclid, Ohio and Kraljevo, Serbia to connect through Sister Cities program

Ohio National Guard Soldiers and Airmen work with members of the Serbian Armed Forces during a reconstruction project at the Svetozar Markovic Primary School in Kraljevo, Serbia in 2012. The school was damaged during a 5.3 magnitude earthquake in 2010 that damaged nearly 6,000 buildings in the town. Kraljevo and South Eucid, Ohio are working to become partners through Sister Cities International, an extension of the Department of Defense State Partnership Program pairing of Ohio and Serbia.

PATRIOT DAY September 11, 2018.

The Ohio National Guard honors Patriot Day and the memory of all those who died during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Since 9/11, more than 25,000 Ohio National Guard Soldiers and Airmen have deployed, many of them multiple times, in support of the War on Terrorism.

Airmen with the 179th Airlift Wing participate in Strike Out Sexual Assault, Sept. 15, 2018, at the Mansfield Lahm Air National Guard Base in Mansfield, Ohio. The event consisted of a Wiffle ball tournament to build awareness of the Department of Defense Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program, which is designed to maintain readiness by educating service members about proper conduct, behavior and responsibilities, as well as provide support and treatment for those who have experienced any form of sexual assault.

The Ohio National Guard honors POW/MIA Recognition Day Sept. 21.

About 82,500 Americans remain missing or unaccounted for from wars fought since World War II to the present, including nearly 3,700 Ohioans. We honor prisoners of war and those missing in action for their service to our nation. Pulling from the Buckeye Guard archives, we recount the story of retired Col. Mike Roberts, a former commander of the 178th Fighter Wing in Springfield, Ohio, who spent several weeks as a POW in Iraq when his F-16 Flying Falcon was shot down in the early days of Operation Desert Storm.

On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Sept. 26, 1918

The American Expeditionary Force (AEF) launches the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, which was the main portion of the final Allied offensive that ended World War I. The 37th “Buckeye” Division, 166th Infantry and 2nd Battalion, 372nd Infantry are all credited with participation in various phases of the largest offensive in U.S. military history.

On this day in Ohio National Guard history, Sept. 27, 1918

2nd Lt. Albert E. Baesel of Company B, 148th Infantry, 37th Division was killed near Ivoiry, France while attempting to rescue a wounded Soldier during the Meuse-Argonne Campaign. For his action he would be awarded the Medal of Honor.

The Ohio National Guard honors Gold Star Mother's and Family’s Day Sept. 30.

Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day is observed in the U.S. on the last Sunday of September, recognized as the day when America honors surviving parents and families of fallen service members who died while defending the nation. It provides us with an opportunity to acknowledge not only the sacrifice, but also the selfless service surviving family members give to our nation.
