National Red Ribbon Month: Airman helps combat opioid epidemic

Staff Sgt. Carolyn Kinzel, C-130 Hercules loadmaster assigned to the 164th Airlift Squadron in Mansfield, Ohio, works full-time as an analyst for the Ohio National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, supporting the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Cleveland office. With a degree in geospatial sciences, Kinzel recently used her skills to create a map to determine optimal locations in the Cleveland area to place fentanyl test stripe stations, potentially saving thousands of lives from accidental fentanyl overdoses.

Soldiers of 1-148th Infantry Regiment tackle combat during annual training

Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment trained to maintain their combat readiness over a two-week period this summer at Camp Atterbury Joint Training Center near Edinburgh, Indiana. This training served to greatly enhance the cohesion and battle readiness of the participating companies, growing them into an even more lethal fighting force.

National Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 6-12

Firefighters from the 180th Fighter Wing run fire protection drills as part of a coalition fire department team during the Northern Strike 19 training exercise this summer at Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, Mich. Challenging training enables Air National Guard firefighters to protect military installations and aircraft from the threat of fires and other incidents, but also makes them ready to assist civilian fire departments with medical and fire emergency support through mutual aid agreements at no cost to the local communities.

Be safe online: October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Senior Master Sgt. Nick Wirwille, superintendent of the cyber systems operations shop with the 179th Airlift Wing Communications Squadron, works on a computer Oct. 6, 2019, at the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield, Ohio. Cyber systems operations specialists design, install and support systems to ensure they operate properly and remain secure from outside intrusion. “If you aren’t following proper cybersecurity, (it) can wreck your life,” Wirwille said. “It is the most important thing in the world right now to be aware of.”

Airman helps fight war on drugs

Tech. Sgt. Michael Hilliard, an operations intelligence specialist at the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield, Ohio, works as an analyst for the Ohio National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, supporting the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Cleveland office and the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office Crime Strategies Unit. “We have ways to help our community and citizens of the state beyond our one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer,” Hilliard said. “It’s not always about deploying somewhere else or hurricane and emergency response. This is an additional way that we can help the community.”

Senior Airman Michael Early, an operations intelligence analyst at the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield, Ohio, also works as an analyst for the Ohio National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, supporting the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Cleveland office. Early has served in the Ohio Air National Guard for 3 1/2 years and uses what he has learned throughout his military career to propel him forward in his new job. “The Air National Guard has provided me with the specific training needed to do this type of analysis and do this type of work,” he said. “I think this job is super rewarding and something you can directly see the impact that we do as analysts on the counterdrug program.”

Ohio Army National Guard aviation unit to deploy

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jeffrey Brinley, a C-26 pilot for Detachment 2, Company A, 2nd Battalion, 641st Aviation Regiment, says goodbye to Chief Warrant Officer 2 Zachary Hook, a medevac pilot for Detachment 2, Company C, 3rd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment (General Support Aviation Battalion), after Hook’s deployment ceremony Oct. 17, 2019, at the MAPS Air Museum in North Canton, Ohio. Company C is a medevac support unit that is deploying to the U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) region, located in Southwest Asia. Camp Perry honored for historic preservation efforts

The Ohio National Guard received a Preservation Merit Award Oct. 19, 2019, from the Ohio History Connection for historic renovations to the Hough Auditorium at Camp Perry Joint Training Center in Port Clinton, Ohio. A $1.6 million federally-funded renovation project completed last year upgraded the interior of the 81-year-old theatre, including new seating, restrooms and lighting.

Airman first to compete in OHARNG Combatives Tournamenth

Staff Sgt. Christopher Kervick, a cyber security specialist assigned to the 180th Fighter Wing in Swanton, Ohio, became the first Ohio Air National Guard competitor in the six-year history of the Ohio Army National Guard Combatives Tournament when he participated in this year’s event. Kervick, who practices Brazilian jiu-jitsu and brought home a silver medal in the middleweight division, encourages more Airmen to compete in future tournaments: “If you’re a wrestler or a jiu-jitsu person, it’s an absolute ideal weekend — representing your wing, getting to hit people and getting paid to do it!”

New, nontraditional Army signal company activated

A new Ohio Army National Guard network operations unit was established during an activation ceremony Oct. 20, 2019, at the 216th Engineer Battalion’s headquarters, located at the Woodlawn Training and Community Center in Cincinnati. The new unit will provide a multitude of cable, wire and fiber optic systems installation and maintenance capabilities.

Tone set for training year during 2020 Army Leaders Conference

Command Sgt. Maj.
