The 112th Engineer Company is proud to announce the return of Pvt. Matthew H. Atsma from his Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. Atsma hails from Seville, Ohio, and is not the first in his family to join the military. His grandfather served with the Army in Alaska in the 1950s and his brother Tommy is currently a specialist with the 2nd Battalion, 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, in McConnelsville, Ohio.

While at his AIT, Atsma learned basic heavy equipment operating skills. Of the seven different pieces of equipment, Atsma said his favorites were the bulldozer and the excavator.  Atsma will be joining the 1192nd Engineer Company in Newton Falls in April. The 1192nd is a subordinate unit within the 112th Engineer Battalion, one of the oldest and most decorated battalions in the state of Ohio, which traces its origins back to Gen. Moses Cleveland, who was commissioned by Congress as a captain of a Company of Sappers and Minors on August 2, 1779.
