Engineer company welcomes new commander
by Spc. Timothy Penley,
1191st Engineer Company

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio—Capt. Gene Hancock assumed responsibility of the 1191st Engineer Company during a May 2, 2010, change-of-command ceremony at the Ohio National Guard armory here. Local dignitaries from the Portsmouth community, 16th Engineer Brigade, 216th Engineer Battalion and family members attended to lend support. Hancock’s wife and mother were presented with bouquets of red and white roses symbolizing the engineer spirit, honor and appreciation.

Hancock brings with him command experience and knowledge including a deployment to Kuwait as a contracting officer in 2008. He also served as the plans officer for the 216th in 2009, rear detachment commander for A Company, 1st Battalion, 145th Armored Regiment in 2007, and the executive officer for B Company, 1-145 in 2006. Hancock began his career in 1990 in the infantry before accepting a commission in 2005.

Although Capt. Dion Goins passed the reigns to Hancock, he will not be too far from his former company. Goins will serve as the training officer for the 216th. During his tenure as company commander, the 1191st mobilized to Louisiana in support of Hurricane Gustav relief efforts in September 2008.
