On this date in Ohio National Guard history, Aug. 1, 1943, the American Eighth Air Force began air raids on Nazi oil fields and refineries around Ploesti, Romania. Ohio National Guard Lt. Col. Addison Baker, who commanded the 93rd Bombardment Group, was shot down after sustaining severe damage from enemy ground fire. After dropping his bombs, Baker tried to gain enough altitude so his crew could bail out but the plane was too badly damaged and crashed, killing Baker and his crew. For his determined leadership and devotion to accomplishing his mission, he was awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor.

Soldiers of the 1194th Engineer Company deplane in mid-August at Fort Bliss, Texas, returning stateside after completing their overseas deployment. The Chillicothe, Ohio-based unit, which has been mobilized since last October, conducted vertical engineering operations in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

This year’s Ohio National Guard Marathon Team became the first to take home a top three finish in the annual Lincoln National Guard Marathon earlier this year in Lincoln, Neb. The performances by Sgt. William Collins (from left) of Company B, 237th Support Battalion (3 hours, 13 minutes, 34th place), Sgt. Eric Kinman of the 945th Engineer Company (3:02, 18th) and Pfc. Zane Miller of the 1483rd Transportation Company (2:56, fifth) earned them spots on the All Guard Marathon Team, which allows them to run in selected future marathons representing the National Guard.

A construction team works to complete the concrete base of a 9/11 memorial at the 180th Fighter Wing in Swanton, Ohio. The memorial, a gift from the community to the community, will be dedicated on Sept. 11 to the memory of the lives lost during the terrorist attacks 15 years ago.

More than 60 civilian clergy members recently attended a two-day symposium, organized by the Ohio National Guard and the Department of Veteran Affairs, which provided religious leaders guidance on how to assist service members and veterans with the challenges unique to the military. Attendees of the Community Clergy Training program symposium, hosted at the Ohio Emergency Management Agency in Columbus, Ohio, learned how they can better support military members and their Families and received a ministry toolkit that provides best practices and resources.

the Air Force conducted its first flight of the KC-135 Stratotanker, which has remained in continuous service to the U.S. military and its coalition partners since. The 121st Air Refueling Wing, located at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in Columbus, Ohio, operates the KC-135 and stands ready to provide aerial refueling and airlift capabilities in support of combat and humanitarian missions worldwide.
