On this date in Ohio National Guard history, Aug. 1, 1943, the American Eighth Air Force began air raids on Nazi oil fields and refineries around Ploesti, Romania. Ohio National Guard Lt. Col. Addison Baker, who commanded the 93rd Bombardment Group, was shot down after sustaining severe damage from enemy ground fire. After dropping his bombs, Baker tried to gain enough altitude so his crew could bail out but the plane was too badly damaged and crashed, killing Baker and his crew. For his determined leadership and devotion to accomplishing his mission, he was awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor. Ohio Army National Guard |

More than 60 civilian clergy members recently attended a two-day symposium, organized by the Ohio National Guard and the Department of Veteran Affairs, which provided religious leaders guidance on how to assist service members and veterans with the challenges unique to the military.
