Spc. Kristopher Fries, a logistician with the 637th Chemical Company, is responsible for maintaining protective masks as a member of the Ohio National Guard’s CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) Task Force. The morning sunrise emerges behind the fallen service member memorial March 8, 2017, at the Maj. Gen. Robert S. Beightler Armory in Columbus, Ohio. The memorial sculpture, also referred to as a battlefield cross, is part of a monument plaza dedicated in 2008 that honors all Ohio National Guard members who have been killed in action throughout the organization’s nearly 230-year history, spanning 10 wars and more than 80 campaigns. The battlefield cross, composed of a rifle with bayonet attached, helmet and boots, started during the Civil War as a means of identifying the deceased on the battleground before they were removed. The Ohio National Guard celebrates Chaplain William Patrick O’Connor was an Irish Catholic priest from Cincinnati who served as a chaplain in the Ohio National Guard. Following the U.S. entry into World War I in 1917, Father O’Connor became the first priest in Ohio to enter the Army and was commissioned as a chaplain with the 136th Field Artillery, 37th Division, remaining in the Guard after the war and eventually serving as the 37th Division chaplain until his retirement.
